What is Executive Function and Why Does It Matter?
Executive function is like the brain’s management system—it helps us plan, focus, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks. For many individuals, especially those with ADHD, autism, or brain injuries, challenges with executive function can make everyday life feel overwhelming. In speech-language pathology, understanding executive function isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. It impacts how we support goal-setting, organization, self-monitoring, and even how our clients communicate and learn.
Microaggressions and Macroaggressions in Communication Sciences and Disorders
In the field of speech-language pathology, communication is everything—yet too often, our own words and actions can unintentionally cause harm. Microaggressions, like assuming a colleague's role based on their race or questioning a client’s dialect, may seem small but can have lasting impacts on trust and belonging. Macroaggressions—overt acts of discrimination or systemic exclusion—compound that harm. As SLPs, we must be as intentional about equity and respect as we are about articulation and fluency. Accountability isn’t optional when the goal is true inclusion.
